The Sanctuary Of Central Christian Church Is Similar To The Basilica San Miniato Al Monte In Florenc
The Central Christian Church is another significant church in downtown Austin. The church is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was organized in 1847. The church was able to hold its first worship service in a local school building by 1852. In the years that followed, the church continued to grow, and now includes a Spanish congregation. Today, the church focuses on family, community, and global transformation.
The Central Christian Church was established in 1929, and was designed by Robert Leon White, the chairman of the Department of Architecture at the University of Texas. His co-architect was Samuel Charles Phelps Vosper. Both White and Vosper used the Beaux-Arts architectural style to design the church. The sanctuary, which resembles the Basilica San Miniato al Monte in Florence, is decorated with painted trusses and repetitive arches.
